Event Details

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of the League of Women Voters of New Rochelle, the New Rochelle Public Library has placed on display documents and memorabilia from the archival collection of the League held by the Library.

The suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt founded the League of Women Voters in 1920 after the success of the passage of the 19 th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave voting rights to women. In 1924, the League of Women Voters of New Rochelle was established to advance the rights of women and to
promote participation in civic affairs here in New Rochelle.

The selection of documents for the display is a small sampling from the archival collection of the League of Women Voters of New Rochelle. The collection includes meeting minutes of the Executive Board, educational literature, correspondence, voters’ guides, photography, and scrapbooks. The records document the history of the League’s mission to educate the public about voting, voting rights, and the electoral process and to foster active participation in government.
