This movie role, according to Kirk Douglas, was his favorite among all. One man and his horse outwitting all that civilization could use to capture him--autos, jeeps and helicopters. It's moving to see the growing respect between the pursuer--Matthau, and the pursued---Douglas.  An analogy for our times.

Starring Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau, Gena Rowlands, Carroll O"Connor; directed by David Miller; 107 minutes
